Silence is a rather mysterious being. It is nothing more than the absence of noise, but it almost seems like it is the loudest of times. While we speak of it, the small sounds from the environment start getting louder and louder. Time seems to slow down, as nothing really happens. Such an awkward moment to live through, but even that has to come to an end. Nero stood up and walked past Chesh without uttering a single word. Something had caught his interest for quite some time, as he listened in on the story of the young cat. He pulled out a music box from a shelf, which had a name engraved on it. Slowly he lifted the lid so that its melody would fill the room, even if he felt the slight hostility from his new friend, as he just did whatever pleased him with things that did not belong to him.
“You know you can be awfully rude, I open my heart and you have nothing to say, but rummage through things that are not yours!” A slight anger had filled the air of the room, as the shadows slightly acted up. Nero calmly ignored the events and sat down comfortably next to the two-tailed cat, as he set down the melodic box between them. “Have you ever heard the tale of Sisyphus? The man who would push a boulder up a hill over and over again, almost as if this was his only duty for the rest of eternity?” Chesh calmed down, but mostly due to the confusion that this rather obscure mythological question has brought into the room. He simply nodded wondering where exactly he was going with this information. “Humanity gets worked up about the strangest things, building up anger and hate, almost as if it was second nature to us. As soon as it reaches its peak, much like Sisyphus’ boulder, it would all come rolling down to where it started. An endless cycle that haunts us into eternity at society keeps moving on.”
Nero started humming the melody, as he placed his hand on the top of Cheshire’s head, smiling at him with a soft grin on his face that hid all his emotions. “I understand that I could say so many things. I feel so bad for you. It must have been hard going through it all. That is terrible, how could one ever live through something so horrible! Repetition, it is just me repeating the same line by formulating it in different ways. I may never understand your pain, I only know my own, but that does not mean I did not care for your words.”
The two-tailed cat started laughing. He fell over on the bed while rolling around, almost as if he was trying to find a perfect spot to sleep. “You, you are most certainly an interesting man! Would you tell me your story, as I have told you mine?” The cat’s curiosity has returned and so has his grin. “A story of a young traveler like myself would not be of interest to you, there is not much to tell!” Nero jokingly avoided the topic, as he closed the small play box next to him. “If you want to know who I am, there is nothing to tell. I am but a man stranded in a world of curiosities. My life before was full of rules and limitations, so I gave it all up to just do whatever pleased me. I am a flawed and selfish being that wanders this earth seeking whatever he can find.”
That answer was not sufficient enough for the young cat, he goes into as much detail as he can bear, but this stubborn fool thinks he can avoid his question. “You are a traveller, but you don’t seem to have much with you. One single backpack that does not hold much for survival and clothes that seem oddly clean. Do you travel only the long roads from one town to another?” Just now, Chesh believed he had caught him to spill the beans. Has he managed to outwit the man, who randomly quotes Greek mythology to make a point? With his age and experience, this young fool would not be able to avoid answering these questions in any way that would not reveal something about him. “If you put it that way...” There it is, Cheshire thought, this is his golden opportunity to make the man talk. No one would make him say so much without saying anything himself.
Suddenly, the room was filled with darkness as the sun finally set for the day. Silence came back as both looked out into the distance through the small window. There they saw a light flash, almost as if it was trying to signal something. For just a few brief seconds it would go out and on again, almost as if it was speaking to them. In the distance, there was something that caught their curiosity, but even more so that of Nero. His eyes flashed at the wondrous distant land that was calling to him. “I will make a deal with you, my friend! If you truly want to know more about me, you will have to join me on my travel.” Chesh ran right into that trap, his own curiosity put him in a position he could hardly refuse, but he did not want to leave this place behind.
“This will not just be a journey into nothing and neither into mystery. That light that you see out there?” Nero asked, as he pointed out to the constant blinking. The striped cat never noticed it, as he kept waiting on his little spot, maybe someone would come walking through that entrance. “I think Alice left you a message that has been flashing into this room for years, but given your love that one spot, you never were able to notice it. Off in the distance, a journey is calling out to you, asking you to embark on it. A small ray of hope that lasted for God knows how long, you only never saw it because that regret of yours would not let you enter this room all these years. So, will you join me, as we find out what the message means?”
