“Was it failure that created the twin-tailed cat?” Nero asked wondering what his furry friend meant by those words. The cat did not grin nor did he react. He kept looking off into the distance as if a mouse was just about to find its way into his domain. Yet it could not be a mouse, as his face did not move one inch. It was simply glued to something that may have been of interest to him. Maybe it was a distant memory simply waiting to be uncovered, or just a painful one waiting to be remembered. The young traveller could not bring himself to say another word. Something was haunting his new friend’s mind and no human word would be able to bring him out of it. In his heart, there must be something a bit frightening.
“Have you ever fallen in love?” He was quite surprised by that question. It seems that his premonition from earlier might have been closer to the painful truth than he had ever expected. He smiled and answered with a simple “Yes.” before his own memories starting flooding his mind. “I did once a long time ago and no matter how beautiful those times were, I despise the fact that I can only see them with regret. No one should ever think back upon those times with sinister thoughts. Yet I can’t help it. I just can’t help myself.” That grin returned on his face, but this time it was different. He neither was curious or elusive, but angry and lost. “How many years have I spent sleeping on that gateway? No matter what I did, I was always there, keeping my eyes out for whatever is there. One day, no, I just thought I could be selfish. What did I get out of it?”
If you looked closer you could see anger flowing out of him. His black stripes were coming alive, as the hair on his tail was blowing up. One could easily mistake the growing hair on his back as a statement of violence. Flailing tails were swirling around. It would make you wonder if he was just about to attack an enemy that has infiltrated his very home. Truly a feeling one can easily understand given his protective nature towards this land. It is his holy land and sacred memory. Those feelings of regret might be the only thing keeping him at the brink of sanity.
What a sight it was to behold. Seeing a ferocious cat is one thing, but such pure anger is truly an oddity in this world. Those memories are truly dangerous, as they will drive him towards that edge. A crossing that may lead him to a world of darkness. Looking closely the traveler realized that those black stripes in his hair were travelling. The lines were closing, as if some form of darkness might be taking over. His mind wandered towards what may have happened at this place. It is so lost and solemn, but hides such dark and mysterious ways. So much that it can make a simple creature learn to hate. He could have a peaceful life, but our own dangerous ways have corrupted him. What happened here? A place of ruin without bloodshed, but something happened here. There may have been some kind of effect that would lead this poor creature to such extents.
The moment he saw that one faithful reaction. Within all that rage and anger, there it was. One could see it with just a glimmer in his eye, a faint sense of emotion that could fight its way through. There it was, a single tear running down that dark grin, as it kept growing. It seemed painful that all he could do was feel such anger, but sadness was but such a natural reaction. Without a single word, he put his hand on his grinning friend’s head. Just for a moment, Chesh felt such strange warmth. Everything that was collecting in his heart, it almost felt like it was disappearing slowly. The ever-growing black stripes were shrinking back to their original size, as more tears kept rushing out. Slowly his twin tails were calming down. All he felt was this tear in his heart closing just by a small bit. The pain was still there, but something else was at least letting it calm down. What was this strange feeling?
“It is strange to feel compassion at the moment you are the angriest. Something starts ripping on your heart, as if all that what is made to protect it starts falling apart. Your heart and the pain are still lingering, but somehow you have that slight feeling of relieve. You’re not alone in the world. It won’t take that feeling away, but you will not be able to change it either, at least not alone.” A short amount of silence followed. They simply sat there, as Cheshire started rolling up in a ball and purring. Just for a few minutes, it felt like all his problems could disappear. They may return once his mind wanders off again, he would not give up this moment for the world. Everything would change once Nero asked a question even he did not expect he would make. “Would you want to join me on my travels?”
